Our Education Model

At Academy Northwest, we focus on the student as a learner and achiever, the parent as the trainer and collaborator with a teacher, and the teacher as the supervisor who provides oversight, support, and assessment. This is known as Student-Directed Education.

Unlike most private schools, Academy Northwest (ANW) operates under Washington State’s private school extension law. When the 1985 home-based education law was passed, the legislature amended the private school law to allow families to homeschool under the supervision of a private school.

This law allows ANW to offer a distinctive blend of Christian private school and home-education oversight geared specifically for your family and your student's learning style. With ANW, families have the benefits of independent homeschooling and the support of a fully accredited private school in one program.
How Our Model Works
A summary of our educational model:

-
ANW teachers partner with parents and students to formulate a plan for accomplishing academic goals.
-
Teachers and parents partner together to customize a combination of resources and methods that match the student's learning style.
-
Through ongoing collaboration, support, and assessment, the teacher ensures that goals are met.
-
When a student encounters a problem, the teacher can provide motivation and offer guidance in a course correction if needed.

Unlike the typical “factory” model often used in a traditional school, our approach honors the student's learning needs while challenging the student to new levels of understanding and skill. In developing an education plan for a student, we do not endorse or follow just one curriculum source. Instead, our teacher draw from a large pool of effective educational resources.

In addition, our teachers communicate with each other and share ideas. In this way, all of our families benefit from the knowledge and collaboration of the entire faculty, even though they only work with one specific teacher or a local team of teachers, depending on the size of the learning center. This collaboration process produces an educational experience that allows you to direct your student's education path while utilizing the resources offered in a private Christian school setting.
Multiple Learning Center Locations
With multiple learning centers in the region, ANW functions like a “school-without-walls” and has served thousands of home-educating families in a successful partnership model since 1981.
Each learning center is individually owned and operated while working under the oversight of Academy Northwest’s administrative staff and volunteer board of directors. All the teachers receive regular training in the Academy Northwest educational model.
These learning centers are fully recognized by the state and accredited private schools with low students-to-teacher ratios. Each center integrates a biblical worldview and real-life applications into each student’s learning plan. Our ultimate goal is to empower students to fulfill their God-given purpose and calling.
